Music is a universal language that connects people from all walks of life, transcending language barriers and cultural differences. In the past, The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square has often been referred to as “America’s choir.” However, despite being based in the United States, the Choir has a global reach. This coming April, The Tabernacle Choir will perform at the general conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, an event that brings together members from all over the world to hear messages of inspiration and hope. For this performance, the Choir will no longer be just “America’s choir” but will represent people from all over the world.
To reflect the worldwide mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, plans have been made for qualified Latter-day Saints from selected areas of the Church to sing with the Choir as global participants during the April 2023 general conference. Individual singers were recommended by their Area Presidencies and invited to audition.
“It is possible this will be a onetime event. Or perhaps it will be something we will do periodically. The most likely outcome, however, is that through this pilot project we will gradually see new options and possibilities that will help the Choir better represent the worldwide Church,” said President Michael O. Leavitt.
These participants, who are all faithful and qualified Latter-day Saints, come from different parts of the world, speak different languages, and have different life circumstances. But they all share a passion for music and a desire to share it with others.
Indeed, one of the most beautiful things about music is its ability to connect people, regardless of language and life circumstances. The Tabernacle Choir has been able to do just that—bring people together from all over the world through the universal language of music. By singing together, these global participants will not only be sharing their love of music but also their faith and their desire to connect with others.
We are excited to explore this concept and are pleased to welcome the global participants who will sing with the Choir in April.
